With the speed and power of laptop that now almost equals to a desktop computer no wonder more and more graphic artists and video editors are using these ubiquitous piece of computer. Of course, the portability it can provide is one of the very compelling reason for this trend. It provides efficiency and somehow increase productivity because you can carry your work wherever you want to. Its a good thing for workaholics like you and me. You can do a modification of a graphic job for a client in his home or her office. Onsite video can easily edited and can be presented right away to the client. You can do your work anywhere. Your creativity is enhanced because you are not confined to the four walls of your office or studio. Because of these, a laptop has become an important piece of technology not only for the business crowd but also to the entertainment and multimedia artists such as DJs and video editors.

There are several brands of laptops with different specifications. Other looks cool like the Mac Air but it is not recommended for video editing. The sub $500 notebooks such as the Asus EEE PC and Neo Explore looks tempting but they are not meant to be for processor heavy video editing and graphic rendering jobs. A multi-core CPU laptop is the best choice. A lot of offerings are now available from the efficient dual core to a highly powerful quad core powered lappy. The size of the screen is also very important because it is very impossible or extremely difficult to do a multimedia work on a 7 inch LCD screen of the Asus EEE PC. The rule of the thumb will always be “the bigger the better” for laptop screen size choice. Two separate hard drives is recommended because this will lessen the burden of the hard drive during rendering and could speed up the process significantly. Again the same rules apply, the bigger the better. You are dealing with raw files of video or photo and a one hour of raw video is equivalent to about 13 gig of hard drive space and you don't want your drive filled up easily. RAM is also better when its bigger and so get the biggest capacity that you can find. Two Gig RAM and above is the sweet spot for multimedia artists and video editors. Choose a laptop that has a firewire connector and even better with e-sata interface. A firewire is important if you need to capture some footage from a video digital camera. Firewire has become the de facto standard for digital video camera to computer connectivity. An e-sata connection is of great help when you want to have an additional external drives that operates with the same speed as with the internal hard drives. E-sata like the USB external drives now abounds and so you have a lot choice. Other features such as wifi connection and built in megapixel webcam have now become an integral feature of any laptop and so need to worry about these add on feature.

So if you are into multimedia and video editing kind of job a laptop is a good addition to your powerful multimedia desktop computer. It gets the job done anywhere you want it to be. Just consider the features discussed earlier so that you won't get frustrated from an under-performing laptop.
